Sandy Spring, Maryland

Sandy Spring is a community in Montgomery County, Maryland, located in the State of Maryland north and west of Washington, D.C. The county is considered a part of the suburban Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area.

According to the Olney, Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Olney History: "To the east (of Olney) was a community of Quakers located in Sandy Spring, and this was considered the cultural center of the surrounding villages. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, Sandy Spring boasted blacksmiths, carpenters and merchants, as well as three mills which served surrounding residents. Sandy Spring National Bank was established there, along with Montgomery Mutual Insurance Company, and a circulating library."

Founded 1753
The community was founded by the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers or Friends, a spiritual movement founded in England during the 17th century. They arrived in the state in the early 1700s searching for land where they could grow Tobacco and Corn. They built their Meeting House in 1817 near a spring, which gave its name to Sandy Spring.
Political Influence
Quakers are listed among the historic Peace churches and have communities scattered across the world. The congregation of Friends continues to thrive in Sandy Spring in the current day. Their presence in Sandy Spring in upper Montgomery County is historically significant because of its area-wide pacifist political influence, including Underground Railroad activities in opposition to slavery prior to the U.S. Civil War.
Geographic Area
The United States Census Bureau combines Ashton with the nearby community of Sandy Spring to form the Census-Designated Place of Ashton-Sandy Spring, and all census data are tabulated for this combined entity, the two unincorporated communities. Ashton-Sandy Spring has a total area of 7.6 square miles.

Friends' Meeting House

FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, Sandy Spring, was first settled in 1753 and replaced with the present brick building in 1817. It is shown in the drawing nestled under tall shade trees in midsummer.

The Lansdale House

LANSDALE HOUSE, Sandy Spring, just off Route 108, is a particularly lovely example of architecture for private homes in the upper county area. It is drawn in the midst of lush foliage on a secluded, wooded lot.
